Orthodontic Appliances

Overview
Orthodontic appliances can help protect developing smiles in children and support adults who need retainers, bite correction, or space maintainers. Whether a tooth is lost early, permanent teeth need guidance, or treatment requires specialized support, orthodontic appliances offer customized solutions designed for long-term oral health. At Granite Coast Orthodontics, many of our appliances are designed and fabricated in our in-house laboratory, allowing us to provide efficient turnaround times and personalized care. When needed, we also partner with specialized orthodontic laboratories that use advanced 3D printing from our digital scans to create highly precise, comfortable, and easy-to-clean appliances.

When Are Appliances Needed?

Appliances make sense when baby teeth come out early, when crowding threatens proper bite development, or when a habit like thumb-sucking shifts teeth. We assess growth patterns during routine checkups and recommend intervention when it can prevent more complicated treatment later. Early treatment may help reduce the complexity or length of future braces or clear aligner treatment. We’ll explain our recommendations in straightforward language and use digital X-rays and scans so you can clearly understand your child’s treatment options.

How We Personalize Treatment

We design every appliance around each patient’s unique anatomy, treatment goals, and lifestyle. Our process includes a comprehensive exam, digital impressions, and a customized treatment plan that Dr. Doug reviews with your family. We use iTero® Element digital impressions and i-CAT™ FLX Cone Beam imaging when appropriate to ensure an accurate fit. Because we have an in-house orthodontic laboratory, many appliances can be fabricated right here in our office. For select cases requiring highly specialized designs, we work with trusted orthodontic laboratories that create custom 3D-printed appliances directly from our digital scans for exceptional precision and comfort.

The Appliances We Offer

We offer a wide variety of custom orthodontic appliances designed to support every stage of treatment. Depending on your needs, your appliance may be fabricated in our in-house lab or custom 3D printed by our experienced laboratory partners.

Examples include:

  • Bonded space maintainers that preserve room after early tooth loss.
  • Hawley retainers and clear removable retainers to maintain treatment results.
  • Palatal expanders used during Phase One treatment, which can be made in our office or custom 3D printed by our orthodontic colleagues in Boston.
  • Night guards to protect teeth from grinding and clenching.
  • TMJ splints designed to help reduce jaw discomfort and improve bite function.
  • Distal Jet appliances that help create space by moving upper molars efficiently.
  • Mesial Slider appliances for specific tooth movement and bite correction.
  • Bite plates that help correct deep overbites and improve tooth positioning.
  • Forsus™ appliances that address skeletal discrepancies and overbites while minimizing the need for patient-dependent rubber bands.
  • Additional fixed appliances that guide tooth movement with less day-to-day maintenance than removable elastics.

Every day, our laboratory technician, Sierra, works closely with Dr. Doug to fabricate custom retainers, aligners, and orthodontic appliances that meet each patient’s individual needs. Their collaboration combines clinical expertise with skilled craftsmanship to create appliances that fit comfortably, function effectively, and support successful treatment outcomes.

Benefits For Kids And Adults

Custom appliances help prevent unwanted tooth movement, preserve space for developing permanent teeth, improve bite development, and protect orthodontic treatment results. For children, early intervention may reduce the need for more extensive treatment later. For teens and adults, retainers and other appliances help maintain healthy, stable smiles. Throughout appliance treatment, our goal is to provide solutions that are comfortable, durable, and tailored to your individual needs.

Benefits include:

  • Preserving space so permanent teeth erupt properly.
  • Supporting healthy jaw and bite development.
  • Reducing the likelihood of extractions or prolonged treatment.
  • Helping correct bite discrepancies more efficiently.
  • Protecting orthodontic results for years to come.

Caring For Your Appliance

Proper care helps your appliance perform as intended and last longer. Most removable appliances should be cleaned daily and stored in a protective case when not in use. Patients with bonded appliances should avoid sticky or very hard foods and attend scheduled adjustment appointments. If an appliance becomes loose, damaged, or uncomfortable, contact our office promptly so we can make any necessary adjustments. Our combination of in-house fabrication and advanced digital technology helps us provide durable, accurately fitting appliances while allowing us to address repairs efficiently when needed.
